Cities for Life: celebrating life, fighting the death penalty

Lights come on around the world from Rome, to New York and Santiago at the end of November, because these cities are showing their opposition to the death penalty.

By illuminating a monument or special building such as the Colosseum in Rome and the Moneda Palace in Santiago, whole cities call for the universal abolition of capital punishment.

More than 300 cities will take part in the “Cities for Life” event, including 25 capital cities. Many millions of people are saying “no to the death penalty” and for three days, special events, Nobel Peace Prize winners, and international personalities form a united moral front to stop all executions worldwide.

“Cities for Life – Cities against the Death Penalty” is an annual event organized by the Rome-based Community of Sant'Egidio, in accordance with Amnesty International and other associate members of the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty.

The "Cites for Life" was first celebrated on 30 November 2002, on the anniversary of the first abolition of the death penalty in a modern European state, the Great Duchy of Tuscany in 1786.
